Mobs Mheiriceá (Ep 6)
The American Mob - ep 6
Back to shortlistMobs Mheiriceá charts the story of the rise and fall of the Irish Mob in America over the last century.
The final chapter in this story deals with the last Irish Mobster who is still at large today - James ‘Whitey' Bulger.
Whitey Bulger holds a place in the gangland saga as the most revered and most vilified Irish American mobster of all time. No other Irish mobster since Prohibition achieved as much power as Whitey did and no other Irish gangster did as much to destroy the Irish Mob once and for all.
His almost mythical status is in part due to the fact that his ascent to the top of the criminal underworld was mirrored by the rise of his brother Billy Bulger who was elected President of the Senate in 1978. The Bulger story encapsulates the symbiotic relationship between the gangster and the politician, which had been at the very root of the Irish Mob, and signalled the last remnants of the Irish Mob in the US.
