The loss of the Iolaire remains the worst peacetime maritime disaster in British waters, and yet is widely unknown outside the Western Isles. Over two hundred sailors from Lewis and Harris were drowned as they returned home on leave, having survived the four years of the Great War. The ship struck the infamous rocks, The Beasts of Holm, early on New Year's Day 1919, minutes from the safety of Stornoway harbour. This programme looks at the events of that tragic night and the lasting effect it had on those involved and their community.
