This role is to generate and manage an exciting and diverse range of innovation projects, ideally to the point of productisation. Reporting to the Editor, Rewind & Innovation, the primary function of this role is to take R&D capability, and develop it into engaging audience experiences. The Development Producer will work closely with BBC Rewind, Tech Ops NI, D&L Northern Ireland, BBC Sounds and Taster creative teams, as well as a range of editorial stakeholders and others around the BBC. There will be a particular focus on ideas shaped to reach new and under-served audiences.
There will be innovation using the vast BBC archive and other digital content, but also the capacity to build tools for internal content makers. The aim is to establish BBC Northern Ireland as a ‘centre of excellence’ for innovative, digital and archive development, and as an agile digital production environment. Although archive will play a significant part, it is not exclusively about sweating the value of the BBC’s past. As part of a new Content Hub, the Dev Producer will be expected to spot and seize upon trends in consumption, to advocate for innovation pilots using new and emerging technologies, and to bridge any remaining gap between technical and editorial staff. The candidate will also work with the newly formed BBC Sounds team to develop and pilot audio proposals. We are looking for an experienced person with hybrid talents across these disciplines, who has been around content-making discussions at a high level, and can make decisions and deputise for the Editor when necessary.
This is a challenging role, which will involve negotiation across a number of departments, including RLBA, MC&A, Technical Operations NI and Editorial. There will also be many occasions on which independent companies will be engaged, and their output monitored and managed. The Development Producer will ensure that maximum public value is created in the most cost-efficient and scalable way.
This is not a role for the faint-hearted. The successful candidate will have significant experience of working and dealing with complicated and challenging stakeholders, both internal and external, often at a network, national, or even international level. They will be a digital native, able to manage their time effectively, meet deadlines and bring often disparate partners along with them.
Reporting to the Editorial Lead at BBC Rewind based in Belfast, the Development Producer will be responsible for progressing projects from original ideas through to commission. This will involve managing a variety of projects at different stages of development.
Demonstrating an excellent knowledge of the digital media market, the Development Producer must also have strong contacts within R&D, in academia or other digitally relevant public sector industries.
This role also has editorial responsibility, to make decisions on the use of archive on public platforms, and to comply material.
Significant practical knowledge and skills would be an advantage, in areas such as camera and editing work, basic coding, or a deep familiarity with social media and digital products. Knowledge of different formats, cataloguing or digitization would also be desirable. The successful candidate will work closely with a Technical Product Manager, and a Lead Developer.
The post holder will be based in Belfast but should be prepared to travel within the UK.
Are you the right candidate?
As the ideal candidate for this role you will have a wide knowledge and understanding of internet and digital media technologies, products and services which should include knowledge of emerging trends, user attitudes and behaviours. Along with an excellent track record of creating new and original content, technologies, prototypes, products on the internet and other digital media you will also have a good understanding of the practices and technologies used in an agile development and design team. You must have experience of developing and delivering complex projects and a proven ability to deliver complex projects to deadlines and within budget. You will be a user of digital media technologies and have strong editorial judgment and understanding of legal and rights issues relating to digital media content. Your problem-solving skills and confidence to make decisions without escalation will be excellent and you will have good contacts with relevant professionals and organisations across the industry. It is vital that you are confidence to present your work in public, to small and large groups and have experience of leading a team.
