Vocal Chords: Singing Our Way Home

Vocal Chords is a five part music feature series for RTÉ Lyric FM presented by singer Iarla Ó’Lionáird (The Gloaming) as he embarks on a musical odyssey to discover the global phenomenon of the human voice as well as asking the simple but vital questions - why do we sing?, what happens when we do? and is the singing voice mankind’s primary means of communication? Vocal Chords: Singing Our Way Home In this episode of Vocal Chords, presenter and The Gloaming singer, Iarla Ó’Lionáird explores the roots of traditions and folk song and how language, culture, identity and belonging are all tightly interwoven with song and singing. Song, Iarla says, becomes a vocal map to ourselves, to our roots, to our home. From the island of Inis Mór in Ireland with Sean Nós singer Treasa Ní Mhoilláin, and the Cwmbach Male Choir in Wales, to the spirituals in Africa and beyond, Iarla brings singing back to its roots and uncovers how songs and singing can bring you home. Vocal Chords is aimed at a global audience.
