Blàr Loos

Almost every town and village in Scotland was affected by losses at the Battle of Loos, the battle which the British Army used poison gas as a weapon for the first time. Thirty-five thousand Scottish soldiers fought at Loos in France in Sep 1915 and around seven thousand were killed. Although losses were high there was little progress for the Allies on the Western Front and few lessons were learnt from the battle. Catriona Murray looks at the role of Highlanders at the Battle of Loos and hears stories of the fallen, of survivors and of some who were honoured.
