The McIlvanney Conversations

Hugh McIlvanney is widely regarded as Britain's greatest-ever sportswriter and has attended almost every major sporting event over the last 50 years and more.  In a six-part series of conversations with Geoff Webster, he rolls back the years to recollect a golden age for sport with great personalities such as Muhammad Ali, George Best and Lester Piggott, reflecting his own three great loves - boxing, football and horse racing.  This edition concentrates on football and his close friendships with four of the greatest managers - Jock Stein, Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Sir Alex Ferguson - all brought up in the West of Scotland and not far from Hugh's home town of Kilmarnock.   He also reads from his lifelong archive of cuttings, movingly remembering the night of Stein's death at the end of a World Cup qualifier in Wales.  At the age of 82, he recently announced his retirement from The Sunday Times.
