R.L. Stevenson's Weir Of Hermiston
Robert Louis Stevenson's last, and many would argue, best novel. Halfway through writing the story of the Weir family, Stevenson died in Samoa in 1894. Using Stevenson’s notes, the dramatist Colin Macdonald has completed this majestic, brooding story of forbidden love and adolescent rebellion, set in a teeming Edinburgh and a remote Borders farm at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. It’s a love story against all odds, with three great central parts: Archie Weir, the rebellious son; his father, the hanging judge Lord Hermiston, and Christina Elliot, the feisty daughter of a poor farming family.
