RTÉ Investigates: Inside Ireland's Nursing Homes
An undercover documentary examining standards of care in facilities owned by Ireland's leading provider of private nursing homes. The footage revealed multiple care failings & neglect including chronic staff shortages, vulnerable residents left unsupervised & inappropriate handling of frail older people. The nursing home company, Emeis Ireland apologised saying the lack of dignity & breaches of rights were deeply distressing. The sector’s regulatory body subsequently reviewed all 25 Emeis homes, paused admissions & began a review of its own inspection process. Concerns were reported to the police service & new laws protecting older people are to be fast-tracked through government.
