The Richest Scot in the Empire

John Patrick Crichton Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, was the Scottish heir to a massive Welsh fortune and one of the richest men in the world. With an annual income in excess of £150,000 – around £15 million in today’s money – Bute pursued his passions with a vengeance. He was one of the most extraordinary men of the Victorian age – a blue-blooded aristocrat who supported women’s rights and striking miners … an intellectual who was a ghost hunter … and a Welsh-speaking Scottish Nationalist. Above all, Bute was a fabulously rich and visionary creator of great architecture.
