This Thing of Darkness
What happens in the aftermath of a disaster when you yourself are the disaster? Inspired by the words of our series consultant, Forensic Psychiatrist Dr Gwen Adshead, we set out to refresh the genre of crime drama and to make a series exploring the psychological impact of murder on families and perpetrators alike. In seven episodes, each lasting 45 minutes, there are three strands: This Thing of Darkness is not a murder mystery – although we have the audience second guessing themselves throughout - but is instead a gripping and detailed exploration of why murder happens and of how victims and killers come to terms with the impact of fatal violence. For the prisoners, there is no escape from their actions, but there is the opportunity to find some self-understanding. For the family there are tentative steps towards self-definition. And for the audience: a long view on humanity’s ability to cope, and struggle, through disaster, trauma and change.
