Misneach - Tom Clonan
In 2000, while completing a PhD as a Captain in the Irish Army, Tom Clonan uncovered a systematic culture of discrimination, bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assaults directed at female members of the Defence Forces. From September 1998 to February 2000, Tom interviewed 60 female soldiers. 59 of the 60 interviewed reported a catalogue of bullying, sexual harassment, assault, attempted rape and rape. Tom reported his findings and was confident his superiors would end the culture of violence against his female colleagues. He was wrong. He became a whistleblower through the act of research and has faced reprisal ever since.
