Travelling Folk

Travelling Folk celebrated 100 years of broadcasting from Aberdeen in true 1920’s rip-roaring style. Anna Massie donned her sequins and harked back to the gales in Aberdeen, which welcomed the first broadcast in October 1923. We enjoyed music and commentary on the passage of folk music through the North East over the century, from folklorist Steve Byrne (Malinky). Ellie Beaton brought a celebration of the Doric language, with guitarist Gillie O’Flaherty. Paul Anderson brought tears to all, with his Lament for Robbie Shepherd, and Joe Aitken lead a fine selection of bawdy Bothy Ballads. The evening was peppered with archival recordings, including a song from a young Arthur Argo, poetry from Peter Buchan, and commentary from the late Hamish Henderson. Members of Stonehaven Folk Club, Glassel House, and SC&T (Scottish Culture and Tradition) filled the audience, dressed in full 1920’s attire. It felt so fitting to be celebrating a centenary of broadcasting the music, language and culture of the area with a room full of folk who understand it and live it day-to-day.
