Donald 'Sweeny' MacSween

Donald ‘Sweeny’ Macsween has brought his inimitable presence to a range of BBC Alba productions this year. Willing to tackle any topic in the week’s news, he regularly entertains on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal’s live Friday morning panel show ‘Naoi gu Deich’. He is best known as a crofter, passionate about farming and his home district of Ness. His farming background has seen him previously present ‘An Lot’ a series of TV programmes from his agricultural holding also including ‘Na h-uain’ a live lambing season and ‘Flu nan Eun’ an unflinching portrait of the impact of a break-out of bird flu on his poultry flock. Many of his programmes have featured his special bond co-worker, David, who has Down’s Syndrome. In 2025 Sweeny hit the milestone age of 40, an opportunity to take stock and explore issues relating to male health and wellbeing. ‘Sweeny @ 40’ is a witty, entertaining exploration of his physical, mental and spiritual health but with an important message to not only men but anyone with a partner, brother or father. The macho farming/football front was laid bare as he attempted everything from pilates to sea swimming, skin care to meditation. A self-professed fan of the Western movie, ‘Wild West Sweeny’ saw him hit the Texas plains to explore the genre and follow in the footsteps of the Gaels who transformed America’s wild west.
